WHAT ABOUT RAW FOOD DIETS?
There is a new trend in the pet food industry to feed "Natural" and "Wild" foods to our most of the time-house pets-and companions.Even among breeders the temptation is to feed the most natural source of protein available-Raw.

The urge to do the best for our little friends is strong and a bit unnerving. We want to do the right thing and don't want someone telling us in the future that you were wrong to feed your dog "that food". We are now so used to finding out years down the road that some marketing campaign sent the public scrambling to get the latest greatest food that only ended up being not so good for our canine friend and may have even put him/her over the edge into unrecoverable disease.

The latest of these trends is the raw food diet. We are asked regularly about or thoughts or knowledge so here is our understanding on the subject.

1) Raw foods need special considerations before being fed to your pet. For example: Freezing turkey and chicken for at least 72 hours can kill parasite larvae and eggs.Make sure your pet is on a good de-worming program if feeding raw poultry.

2) Raw beef and lamb can hide many bacterias that can make your pet very ill.The mass groupings of animals is small spaces before slaughter in facilities encourages disease and bacterial growth.

3) There have all ready been recalls on  frozen raw foods containing salmonella and other bacterial host.

Until there is a safer way to feed raw, our pets will remain on dry kibble, canned food and fresh foods prepared at home.

Most indicators in the industry point towards the future diet of our pets being a mix of fresh food-cooked protein and vegetables along with a good Holistic kibble for adequate vitamin & mineral coverage. 

Until more is known it is better to be "Safe than Sorry".

ETHOXYQUIN ALERT!
Many pet food companies claim to produce natural food. Using a loophole in the law, manufactures are not required to list a chemical preservative if they purchase their fat pre-preserved with BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, or any other preservative. Recently several pet food companies have been found to be using fishmeal and or fish oil that was chemically preserved. This is not the case with The PetWay or VéRUS Pet Foods. All of the fats or oils used in PetWay & VéRUS Pet Foods, including our Menhaden Fish meal and oil, are purchased naturally preserved. BEET PULP
Beet pulp is used in PetWay Blends as it is considered the best fiber source for companion animals.

Fiber is a non-digestible carbohydrate that affects intestinal transit time, fecal output and condition, absorption of nutrients, bacterial conditions within the gut, and is responsible for maintaining a healthy gut and normal intestinal function.

There are many different fiber sources and they are often classified on their fermentability.

Fermentability is the ability of a fiber to be broken down by bacteria within the intestine, which results in the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFA's). The cells lining the wall of the intestine are responsible for nutrient absorption and need a large amount of energy to maintain their rapid turnover rates. The SCFA's produced by fermentable fiber is their only source of energy. A deficiency of these SCFA's can result in loss of cell function and reduced nutrient absorption.

Cellulose (wood pulp), peanut hulls, and soybean hulls, used by some pet food companies, are non-fermentable, producing very few SCFA's, and simply add bulk to the diet.

Highly fermentable fiber, such as pectin, produces high levels of SCFA's, but also results in loose stools.

Beet pulp (produced from sugar beets after the sugar is removed) is a moderately fermentable fiber, and produces enough SCFA's to benefit the intestinal cells while still producing a small firm stool.

Many scientific studies have shown beet pulp to be a superior fiber source, resulting in healthier intestinal environment, increased intestinal surface area, reduction of inflammation within the gut, and small firm, not hard, stools.

Important info for storing all natural Pet food

It is very important that you store All Natural Pet Foods PROPERLY if using a plastic container!

Plastic containers may absorb the natural antioxidant designed to protect the fats in all Natural foods. The result is the food can spoil more quickly causing digestive system upset, poor skin and coat conditioning, and poor palatability.

The best method is to store All Natural Pet Foods in its original bag. It is safe to set the entire bag inside your pet food container.

If you are using a pet food container other than the original bag to store your food and your pet experiences any of the above symptoms, immediately stop feeding the food from the container.

The Currituck Animal Shelter will honor Dads on Father's Day Weekend, June 18-19, with reduced prices and extras for all Dads who would like to adopt their new best friend that weekend. For that special weekend dog and puppy adoptions to Dads will be just $65. All dogs have been tested for heartworms; are dewormed; had their rabies vaccination; are spayed or neutered unless they are too young, in which case they come with a voucher for later use; are microchipped; and come with 30 days of free pet insurance! Dogs for Dads will even receive free gourmet dog food, a free dog lead, and a free online digital photo of Dad with his new dog.
