Pet Food Articles & Food Research Updates: Oil Spill in Gulf and it's effect on Petfood- From all updates and reports that we have read the oil spill has not affected fish that is used in pet foods. Testing is done in the fishing areas by NOAA and no chemical levels been reported unsafe by any means where menhaden and other fish for pet food are caught. Most areas are far away from contamination zones. We will keep our eyes on future reports to do all we can to keep you pets food safe. Recent recalls-You can check for Recalls at the website below-FDA Recall list or www.dogfoodproject.com Summertime-Heat is a factor for our pets and our foods-Please make sure your pet has plenty of fresh water available at all times. The best place for your pet food is to be stored indoors in air conditioning. If you use a storage container please make sure that you line your storage container with a plastic disposable liner or wash out the container after each refill with soapy water. Holistic food contains oils that can become rancid and make your pet sick. Proper storage will prevent this. Our foods are kept in a temperature controlled warehouse for safety. Short periods of heat will not do harm-but long term exposure to high temperatures is not good for any food. AS a reminder: The PetWay blends do not contain unhealthy fillers, it is easy to over feed when switching your pet to our blends, please watch your pets waistline-ask your vet for recommended weight if not sure-and feed accordingly. Your pet does not require as much in the bowl with our food-if your pet is overweight -reduce the amount of food he is getting. If severely overweight -The PetWay has a Lean Blend that is healthy without the fillers other companies use.

What about Raw food Diets? There is a new trend in the pet food industry to feed "Natural" and "Wild" foods to our most of the time-house pets-and companions.Even among breeders the temptation is to feed the most natural source of protein available-Raw. The urge to do the best for our little friends is strong and a bit unnerving. We want to do the right thing and don't want someone telling us in the future that you were wrong to feed your dog "that food". We are now so used to finding out years down the road that some marketing campaign sent the public scrambling to get the latest greatest food that only ended up being not so good for our canine friend and may have even put him/her over the edge into unrecoverable disease. The latest of these trends is the raw food diet. We are asked regularly about or thoughts or knowledge so here is our understanding on the subject. 1) Raw foods need special considerations before being fed to your pet. For example: Freezing turkey and chicken for at least 72 hours can kill parasite larvae and eggs.Make sure your pet is on a good de-worming program if feeding raw poultry. 2) Raw beef and lamb can hide many bacterias that can make your pet very ill.The mass groupings of animals is small spaces before slaughter in facilities encourages disease and bacterial growth. 3) There have all ready been recalls on frozen raw foods containing salmonella and other bacterial host. 4) Salmonella & E. Coli can pass from pet to owner and vice versa- good hygiene and proper food preparation along with cleaning of utensils and food bowls must be practiced if handling a raw diet.
Until there is a safer way to feed raw, our pets will remain on dry kibble, canned food and fresh foods prepared at home. Most indicators in the industry point towards the future diet of our pets being a mix of fresh food-cooked protein and vegetables along with a good Holistic kibble for adequate vitamin & mineral coverage. Until more is known -better "Safe than Sorry".
Ethoxyquin Alert! Many pet food companies claim to produce natural food. Using a loophole in the law, manufactures are not required to list a chemical preservative if they purchase their fat pre-preserved with BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, or any other preservative. Recently several pet food companies have been found to be using fishmeal and or fish oil that was chemically preserved. This is not the case with The PetWay or VéRUS Pet Foods. All of the fats or oils used in PetWay & VéRUS Pet Foods, including our Menhaden Fish meal and oil, are purchased naturally preserved.
